Alternative Text

Alternative text is the text which appears when hovering your mouse over an image. Alt text is used for a number of reasons,

when using a handheld device,

for people with disabilities who use assistive technology,

when using pay per data connections,

search engine optimisation, most seach engines interpret images by reading their alt text.

For example you may have an image that is called bar.jpg, to a search engine this means nothing but if you add an alt text tag of something such as, "main bar in the dalesman, sedbergh" then the search engine can interpret the text, meaning it is more optimised to your specific requirements.
